EXPERIMENT 1

Introduction

There are two types of rotary wing UAVs namely: Multi-Rotor UAV and Single Rotor UAV. Multi-rotor UAVs are the most common type of UAVs and commonly used by professionals and hobbyist alike. They are commonly used for aerial photography and video surveillance. There are different types and classification of multi-rotor UAVs based on the number of rotors on the platform. These are the tricopter (3 rotors), quadcopter (4 rotors), hexacopter (6 rotors), and octocopter (8 rotors). Quadcopters are the most popular and widely used among other classifications of multi-rotor UAVs. Single rotor UAVs on the other hand look very very similar in design and structure to actual helicopters and unlike multi-rotor UAVs, a single rotor UAV has just one big sized rotor plus a small one at the tail to control its heading, just like a helicopter.

Single rotor UAVs are more efficient compared to multi-rotor since they can fly for longer duration and can be even powered by gas engines. In aerodynamics, the lower the count of the rotor, the lesser will be the spin of the object. Given this statement, single rotor UAVs are more stable and efficient than multi-rotor UAVs specially than octocopters. Single rotor UAVs, however, are more costly and often have higher risks because of the larger sized rotor blades in case the UAV is mishandled or involved in an accident.

The training module will not only help users learn how to fly the fixed wing UAV but it will also help them learn the assembly and software needed by the fixed wing UAV. The training module will also provide the capabilities and limits of the fixed wing UAV, so that the users would be able to understand how they can maximize the use of the UAV. They will also learn the safety and different measures to avoid any kind of accident when the users are operating the fixed wing UAV. The module will contain detailed process of setting up the UAV and the autopilot software that will control the drone. Moreover, this online training module will demonstrate the different capabilities of the fixed wing UAV that was developed. It would also contain the specifications and parts of the UAV as well as a guide on how to troubleshoot and assemble the UAV.
